Creating Time: Dependent on skills and resources
Cushion innards
Enough material to cover your cushion
Cloth scissors
Ideally, a sewing machine. We used traditional needle and thread and a simple running stitch which we doubled back on itself to make stronger.
Oil pastel to mark the fabric
Tape Measure
A pretty button
- Measure your cushion.
- Mark and cut out two squares of material to that size, ensuring you leave 1-2inches extra on each side so you get the best part of the fabric – and, it makes sewing easier! Also ensure you leave extra fabric at one end (at least half the width of the cushion).
- Pin and sew the two squares of material together along three sides, leaving the longest side open. Ensure the pattern is facing inwards as you will be turning it inside out.
- Turn the material inside out and put in your cushion.
- Leave the longest side free and tuck the shorter side over the top of the cushion. Pin the shortest side in place.
- Fold the longest side into a triangle so that it reaches half way down the cushion. Fold in the rough edges and pin it and sew it.
- If you haven’t already, remove the cushion and sew the shortest side. To do this, make sure the folded down material is at a slight angle, then sew along the sides and bottom.
- Put the button in place and attach with pins.
- Mark the length of the button on the top piece of fabric (the piece you want to create the hole in).
- Cut a slit in the fabric
- Sew around the hole, sealing the entire length of the edge.
- Pin the button in place.
- Start sewing with a matching or complimentary thread from the underside first.
- Create the desired pattern with the thread.
- Once finished secure in place with a knot.
